This is a recording of Madame Bewell from All Saints School using Skype webconferencing software to speak live and direct to Madame Herblot from Ecole Bantouzelle in Cambrai, Northern France. This is very exciting new technology and Madame Bewell (who until recently was pretty rubbish with computers!!!) is giddy at the thought of the possibilty of connecting St Wilfred's School with a primary school in France.

Free running could be taught in secondary schools - The Independent on Sunday 25 January 2009

Have you heard of the French sport Free Running (also known in French as le parcour)?

Pilot scheme in London shows that the sport,

which combines running with gymnastics, helped to cut youth crime by 30 per cent.

Free running – the sport based on running and leaping over and across buildings and urban obstacles – could be taught in every secondary school in the country under radical proposals to cut youth crime. The mix of running and gymnastics, also known as parkour, is frequently featured in TV advertisements and to spectacular effect in the James Bond film Casino Royale. Now talks are under way to bring it to schools after a successful three-year pilot project in London, which is claimed to have cut youth offending by as much as 30 per cent.

Le 2 Février c'est la Chandeleur - comment faire des crêpes? Très fun! (2nd Feb - How to make pancakes? Very funny! lol)

La Chandeleur

La Chandeleur, autrefois "Chandeleuse", se fête le 2 février, soit 40 jours après Noël. Son nom vient du mot "chandelle".

A l’origine, à l’époque des Romains, il s’agissait d’une fête en l’honneur du dieu Pan. Toute la nuit, les croyants parcouraient les rues de Rome en agitant des flambeaux. En 472, le pape Gélase 1er décide de christianiser cette fête qui deviendra la célébration de la présentation de Jésus au temple. On organise alors des processions aux chandelles le jour de la Chandeleur, selon une technique précise. Chaque croyant doit récupérer un cierge à l’église et le ramener chez lui en faisant bien attention à le garder allumé. Un dicton de Franche-Comté dit d’ailleurs :

Celui qui la rapporte chez lui allumée
Pour sûr ne mourra pas dans l’année

Ce cierge béni est censé avoir d’autres pouvoirs. On dit que quelques gouttes de sa cire versée sur des œufs à couver en assurent une bonne éclosion. Et aussi que sa flamme protège de la foudre si on l’allume pendant l’orage.

Entre temps, une autre tradition a vu le jour : celle des crêpes. Cette tradition se rapporte à un mythe lointain selon lequel si on ne faisait pas de crêpes le jour de la chandeleur, le blé serait carié pour l’année. On dit d’ailleurs :

Si point ne veut de blé charbonneux
Mange des crêpes à la Chandeleur

D’ailleurs, en faisant les crêpes, il faut respecter une autre coutume, celle de la pièce d’or. En effet, les paysans faisaient sauter la première crêpe avec la main droite tout en tenant une pièce d’or dans la main gauche. Ensuite, la pièce d’or était enroulée dans la crêpe avant d’être portée en procession par toute la famille jusque dans la chambre où on la déposait en haut de l’armoire jusqu’à l’année suivante. On récupérait alors les débris de la crêpe de l’an passé pour donner la pièce d’or au premier pauvre venu.
Si tous ces rites étaient respectés, la famille était assurée d’avoir de l’argent toute l’année.

Celui qui retourne sa crêpe avec adresse, qui ne la laisse pas tomber à terre
ou qui ne la rattrape pas sous la forme navrante de quelque linge fripé,
celui-là aura du bonheur jusqu'à la Chandeleur prochaine

Aujourd’hui, les processions aux chandelles et autres rites n’existent plus mais on a conservé la tradition des crêpes et les commerçants participent en offrant, dès la fin du mois de janvier, qui un pot de confiture pour l’achat d’une crêpière, qui une crêpière pour l’achat d’un paquet de farine ‘spécial crêpes’.

Enfin, n’oublions pas les croyances liées à la météo. En de nombreux pays, on croît que le jour de la Chandeleur, un ours sort de sa tanière. Si la température est douce et qu’il voit le soleil, il retourne vite reprendre son hibernage, car il sait que le beau temps ne durera pas. Un proverbe dans le Calendrier des bons laboureurs en 1628 disait :

Si fait beau et luit Chandeleur
Six semaines se cache l'ours

Un autre proverbe français dit :

Si le deuxième de février
Le soleil apparaît entier
L'ours étonné de sa lumière
Se va mettre en sa tanière
Et l'homme ménager prend soin
De faire resserrer son foin
Car l'hiver tout ainsi que l'ours
Séjourne encore quarante jours

Dans d'autres pays c'est la marmotte qui sort. Si elle voit son ombre, cela signifie qu'il y a du soleil, alors elle retourne vite continuer à hiberner car elle sait que l'hiver va encore durer. En effet :

Soleil de la Chandeleur
Annonce hiver et malheur

Mais quoi qu’il arrive : qu'en ce 2 février il fasse beau, froid, pluvieux ou neigeux, n'hésitez surtout pas à confectionner quelques crêpes.
En dépit des proverbes et dictons, vous passerez un agréable moment autant à les faire qu'à les déguster !!
