Here is just one example from a recent Y9 lesson on school. This really challenged them and was a great starter whilst I set up the IWB. have a go - it's not as easy as it looks - even I took about 5 minutes and I class myself as relatively clever!!! A head-breaker indeed...
I have loads of back copies so I know how i'll be spending my evenings over the next few weeks!

Year 9 are working on the IMPERFECT at the moment in the context of what school used to be like. We will be using this song and lyrics to see how many IMPERFECT tenses we can spot as we watch the video and hear the song. The document contains : pages 1&2 - the lyrics with the IMPERFECT tenses hilighted and page 3 - this page has been cut up and the 11 phrases placed in emvelopes so pupils can reorder them according to the correct order in which they hear them.

Year 9 will be starting a new topic on Tuesday. They will be presented with the WORDLE cloud below and asked to work in pairs and try to a. work out the new topic and b. categorise the words into as many different types as possible. We will also discuss why some words are larger than others.
Attached is a file from MFL Sunderland which is the original text from which the WORDLE was formed. We will use this in order to complete the sorting exercise (also attached).
Download Au college1 text and wordle PLTS
Download Au college 2 chart to complete
Finally so that pupils have a record of some of the new vocabulary, we will complete a cascade activity where each pupil shares 2 new words from the lesson with a partner and then snowballs their 2 words around the room to make 4, then 8, then 16 and so on. Hi lighter pens will be available so that pupils can colour code their vocabulary according to gender / type of word.
I'll report back on how we get on :) Madame Bewell

Year 9 have been assessed on their speaking this week (you were awesome!) and as a group we recently played consequences as a fun way of getting them to speak lots of nice French on the topic of holidays. They each wrote a word or sentence (eg where, when, how travelled etc) and then passed on to a friend. At the end they had to come up with a nice mini presentation which they tried out in pairs. Brilliant fun and quite entertaining too!
You could do this in preparation for a speaking test with anyone in your family. Give it a try (even if their French isn't that great!)

Last weekend I saw a lovely man called Nick Bilbrough from www.horizonlanguagetraining.co.uk speak at the Languages Show 2009 at Olympia. The man is a genius! I saw him speak last year and came away with masses of brilliant ideas for livening up my lessons and this year was no different.
Below you will find 3 videos from my first lesson back after the show with Y9 who are getting ready for their AfL speaking tasks on Friday. (Video 3 still converting!!!) In the hope of showing them that revision can be fun, we had a go at some active listening. Firstly as a whole calss and then in pairs. They had fun. I had fun. I even pretended to be a kangaroo. It's worth watching the clips for that shot alone!!! Everyone was engaged and I knew that they had understood the French as they were miming the correct mimes. Result.
Have a watch and please comment below - we'd love to know what you think.
Email me if you want copies of any of the resources I used [email protected]
Thanks again Nick - you got my first day back off to a lovely, lively start.
